The book is written as a fictionalized memoir. It is narrated by Nargiz, the last survivor and a medium who is devoted and obliged to remembering her loved ones lost during Armenian genocide-sometimes to the point of seeming obsession. The book is filled with stories of love, betrayal, suspense and miraculous escapes. And, although, true tragedy and romance intermingle within these pages, readers will undoubtedly come away with a much clearer sense of what has come to be known as the Yehern, or, The Catastrophe of Ottoman Armenians during the period of 1915-1922.

Customer Rating: Summary: denying the Genocide? Again? Comment: Only recently do we see the Armenian Genocide being combated with the argument of Armenian violence to the Turks. If you were to look at this argument and the timing of its appearance in the current geo-political atmosphere, common sense shows that this is a last ditch defensive effort for the sake of misguided Turkish nationalism. Seriously, it's a crummy argument. This is evident in its timing on the world scene. People were systematically eliminated. No political ideal should be maintained at the expense of human rights.
Customer Rating: Summary: Another version of old lies Comment: Certain people have been filling the world with the lies about the history and Armenian Genocide,
So far, no one has ever put a credible proof of what they claim have happened.
This issue has highly been politicized and being used as a tool to apply pressure to Turkish government. I am sure many other books can be written in the same tone depicting the agony of the people who suffered during those times from Armenian violence against Ottomon subjects.
Most of the reviews I see are a continuation of such attitute by which no real evidence can be shown other than emotional expressions.
My suggestion is do not buy into these kinds of arguments.
Customer Rating: Summary: Shame on Turkey for continuing to deny the Armenian Genocide Comment: This book sensitively and hauntingly reveals the extent and depth of Ottoman Turkey's viciousness in committing the first major genocide of the 20th century. Even today, the modern government of Turkey continues to deny that it even happened. That denial is the final stage of genocide for which modern Turkey is now guilty. American missionaries in the early 20th century in Turkey documented the horror. In his autobiography, the American ambassador to Turkey in 1915, Henry Morgenthau wrote: "...when the Turkish authorities gave the orders for these deportations, they were merely giving the death warrant to a whole race; they understood this well, and, in their conversations with me, they made no particular attempt to conceal the fact. I am confident that the whole history of the human race contains no such horrible episode as this. The great massacres and persecutions of the past seem almost insignificant when compared to the sufferings of the Armenian race in 1915." The well developed characters of this book reveal with excruciating depth of feeling the suffering of the Armenian men, women and children. That pain continues today for those concerned with truth and justice as Turkey continues its campaign of denial.
