Editorial Reviews:

Magnum photographer Steve McCurry never set out to take portraits. Critically acclaimed and recognized internationally for his classic reportage, over the last 20 years he has worked for the "National Geographic" and other publications on numerous assignments: along the Afghan border, in Baghdad, Beirut and the Sahel. McCurry's coverage of the monsoon won first prize in the World Press Awards, and was part of his portfolio when he was named Magazine Photographer of the Year in 1984. In 1985, McCurry photographed an Afghan girl for the "National Geographic". The intensity of the subject's eyes and her compelling gaze made this one of contemporary photography's most celebrated and best-known portraits. McCurry is now equally famous for his other portrayals of memorable faces that he has encountered while travelling throughout the world. Compelling, unforgettable and moving, McCurry's images are unique street portraits: unstylized and unposed snapshots of people that reveal the universality of human emotion.

Summary: Very Interesting
Comment: This is a great book of portraits. I much enjoyed looking through it and will continue looking through it. I have it on my coffee table and guests love it.

Summary: The piercing eyes of humans
Comment: What a beautiful tribute to mankind. In everyone's face there is a story. And I'm sure no one can forget the eyes of that sad and pensive-looking young girl from Afghanistan. I chose my favorites and titled them. This book, although small, is a perfect table book. As you leaf through it, you need to go slowly to catch what Mr. McCurry intended to depict. And one can't help but dub this book `the uniqueness and sometimes commonness of mankind.'

Summary: disappointing
Comment: the photographs when seen in national geographic's publications are indeed beautiful. that is why it is such a pity that they are compiled in a small book that is hard to open and is rather flatly printed.

Summary: Beautiful
Comment: I received this book as a gift and love it. The collection of close portraits spanning the entire globe makes for compelling viewing. I also like the "pocket" size (the book is about 5x7 inches in size). I do wish some of the colours were a bit more saturated and vivid... still, as a aspiring photographer, it is an inspirational book.

Summary: The Power of Color Portraits
Comment: Excellent example of portrait technique - lighting, backgroud - as well as value and power of color photgraphy. So often B&W is held up as standard of serious color portrait photography, yet we see in color. The fact that these hundreds of photos came from one photgrapher speaks volumes about his rapport with his subjects - although he doesn't actually offer any details - which is a slight weakness of the book. Steve McCurry does not offer any insight into how he gets such open, unblinking moments with those he photgraphs. But never mind, you can learn a lot about photgraphy by just seeing this small compact book - with what appears to be very good binding. His very famous cover shot reminds that any photographer has only a handful of great, memorable photos that are gifted to us by time and place. A really good photo book!
