In India, the law says that children must be 14 to work, but millions of younger children work all day. Children are also supposed to go to school or their parents will be fined, but many children in Bangladesh never receive an education. Arifs father works as a rickshaw driver, one of the toughest and most poorly paid jobs in Bangladesh. Because his father does not earn enough money to support the family, 13-year-old Arif works eight to ten hours every day decorating rickshaws.
But Arif is one of the lucky ones, because he is also able to attend school a few hours a day. And every Friday, he can be seen on a weekly children news program, Mukhto Kabor, as a television reporter. Broadcast on ETV, one of Bangladeshs leading stations, the program tackles social problems and is watched by millions every week. Arif is also on the board of The Childrens Congress, a trade union that works on the behalf of children. The organization speaks with working children and confronts their bosses, pressuring them to allow the children to go to school.
Follow Arif as he contends with his schoolwork and job, in addition to his role as protector of childrens rights. As a child advocate, Arif reports from various sites around the city, interviewing working children, their bosses and the adults who fight to stop dangerous child labor.
Arif Hossein, ETV, Dhaka is a profile of this unique young man, who is not only creating a better future for himself and his family, but for all children in Bangladesh.
