Editorial Reviews:

After 103 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and with four million copies of The Kite Runner shipped, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.

Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.

A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

Summary: Moving
Comment: After reading The Kite Runner and being amazed I had to read Khaled Hosseini's second novel. This was even better! I found it to be a very easy read, easy to follow through the stories of each character. I am truly emotional during each chapter of this book. I could not put it down. I am so grateful that the author has shared his experiences with the reader. This is a great book for all high school age people for educational and informational purposes. A MUST READ

Summary: Amazing story about the struggle of Afghan women to live a 'normal' life
Comment: Hosseini's second book is as good as his first. In this book he takes us along to witness the hard realities of life in Afghanistan through the eyes of two women trying to lead normal lives. Something as simple as loving and being loved back is not so easy in certain societies and certain times. The novel starts prior to the USSR's invasion of Afghanistan and ends in a post 9/11 world. The story is sad, but it is so well written that you'll have a hard time putting the book down. There are many themes in the book, but two strong ones are hope and perseverance.

Summary: WOW
Comment: I don't even know where to begin...this book truly changed my life. What these two women - Marium and Leila - go through is astonishing and heart-wrenching. You really root for them from the get-go and feel their pain as they experience heartache after heartache and disappointment after disappointment. They both experience so many awful things in their lives, separately at first, then together, that you begin to wonder if it will ever get better.
I loved this book, I'd recommend it to anybody and everybody. It'll move your very soul.

Summary: Starts off slow, finishes up strong
Comment: The beginning of the book was a a little dry in my opinion and I had a hard time making it through it. I kept reading a little, getting bored and coming back to it in a month or so. Anyways, somewhere in the middle things really started picking up, and finished up very strong. I was impressed, and it was a good story, although not quite as good as The Kite Runner.
