Editorial Reviews:

It is a special day for cousins Dawa and Olana. Dawa's father is going to find them two small horses in the family's herd. Like other young Mongolian boys, Dawa and Olana are learning to be skilled horsemen.

Living as nomads on the grassy plains, Mongolians rely on horses to support their traditional way of life. Horses help with the daily work of rounding up the goats and cows that provide meat and milk for food, as well as skins for clothing and shelter. Dawa and Olana hope that with their new horses, they will learn to be great horsemen.

Summary: Mongolia, Vanishing Cultures
Comment: Nothing wrong with the book, but I was disappointed to find an elementary book for children. Had hoped to find a serious study of Mongolian Culture. This is the second time that I get a book for children on Mongolia when I had hoped for some serious stuff.

Would also like to signal that my name is Marianne Ahrne - not Ajrne as written above.

Summary: Lovely. Nice gift for kids.
Comment: The pictures are very nicely done - they do evoke the true space of the rolling landscape.

The story is brief and not very involved, but it does give a nice view into the nomadic lifestyle. It is an accurate portrayal of Mongolian countryside life.

It's a nice book to read to kids, and has very nice pictures for them to look at as you read.
