The 160 gravestones in the old Protestant cemetery in Macao are like the pages out of the history book of the Western world's first major encounter with China. Many of the major figures (British, European and American residents and visitors) during the turbulent events that led to the Opium War and the founding of Hong Kong are buried here. The authors spent many years deciphering the fading messages on the gravestones and investigating the backgrounds of the people who lay there. They also took many photographs which are printed in this book. The result is not only a guide to the cemetery, but also an account of an important period in history. Bernard Mellor is the author of "Lugard in Hong Kong: Empires, Education and a Governor at Work 1907-1912".
